I suppose if, ultimately, this blog is going to be something that Maile and Lauren come back to in the future, it should be a record of the good days, the fun (and funny) days, but also the sad days. Today was one of the sad days.
This morning GG Irv passed away. We were very lucky that we were able to share both Maile and Lauren with him over the past five years … and especially, just three weeks ago when we went to Chicago to visit with him one last time.
GG Irv, once a great story teller, was largely silent by the time the girls met him – but they still had this great connection with him. You would have thought going into a nursing home and seeing a wheel chair bound man that didn’t really talk much might have frightened two little girls – but that was never the case for neither Maile nor Lauren. I like to think his eyes sparkled a bit when they were around and there was certainly a lot of love filling the room while they romped around and explored or played the latest game of interest with GG Bea.
I’m headed to Chicago tomorrow for the funeral so we decided to tell the girls tonight that GG Irv had died. We asked around a bit how best to do this and received some good advice, but mainly what you would think – be honest, go slow and do your best to answer the questions that inevitably will come. I had a few tears when I sat them down – I think that was confusing to both girls.
For some reason Maile had in her head that people died when they reached 100 and she knew GG Irv wasn’t 100, so she wasn’t clear how this had happened. We told her that sometimes people die when they are 100 and sometimes they die when they are 94 like GG Irv. She was curious about how it happened and where he went. She was sad that she couldn’t see him any more, so we talked about memories and pictures. That gave her the idea that we should draw a picture of GG Irv so we could remember him – so after we put Lauren to bed, Mommy, Daddy and Maile sat down and drew a picture of GG Irv using a picture Aunt Julie had emailed us a couple days ago.
I honestly don’t think I would have thought to have done something like this if Maile hadn’t suggested it – but it felt good to do – the best I felt all day in fact. So thank you Maile … and good-bye, GG Irv.

(Having trouble with the blog from the hotel wifi, so posting this from my phone – hopefully it formats okay.)
This weekend we are headed to Michigan for a family reunion (Grandma Jill’s side of the family), but before we head there, we stopped in Chicago to visit GG Bea and GG Irv.
Both girls were fantastic. Maile had a lot of fun teaching GG Bea Mancala and Lauren was definitely the apple of GG Irv’s eye – he kept watch on her as she scooted and ran all over the place.
Meanwhile Lauren and GG Irv tried a Lauren version of Uno - which mainly involved GG Irv holding as many cards as Lauren could place on his leg

Last week we headed to Chicago to visit with GG Bea and GG Irv for the July 4th holiday. Grandma and Papa Boston came in as well. It was Lauren’s first chance to meet GG Bea and GG Irv and Maile’s first visit since last September. I am always so thankful when I get to visit GG Bea and GG Irv with the girls – and this visit did not disappoint. Lauren charmed with her smiles and giggles and Maile wowed everyone with how much she has grown up this past year.
On Wednesday night when we arrived we went to dinner with GG Bea - that smile was permanent on her face the whole time she was with Maile and Lauren!
On Thursday, Papa Mike and Grandma Jill brought Maile and Lauren to visit with GG Irv (Christine and I were off to a wedding for the day).
More to come on this trip – we also got to spend some quality time with Aunt Julie, Cousin Donna, Uncle Jimmy and the Vick family cousins…

We had lots of fun this past weekend in Chicago. One of the highlights was getting to spend time with GG Irv (and GG Bea and Aunt Julie too). GG Irv turns 93 in November, which means he is almost 90 years older than Maile. In his prime, GG Irv would have definitely battled Maile for the opportunity to tell the next story, but these days he is more in listen mode. Maile didn’t seem to mind – she was amazing with him – very tender and affectionate, she’d rub his arm and give him hugs and kisses. Maile made GG Irv’s eyes sparkle a bit too – and as you can see below coaxed a very big smile out of him!

Maile’s Great Grandpa Irv turns 92 on Monday! We headed to Chicago this weekend to wish him a happy birthday in person. Papa Mike and Grandma Jill also came in from Boston to meet us. We had a wonderful weekend spending time with the family and especially spending time with “GG Irv” who has 90 years(!) on Maile Girl.
I think it’s safe to say that Great Grandpa Irv’s 92nd birthday is the first time he’s had “Happy Birthday” sung to him in Mandarin Chinese! And I’m sure he got a kick out of the fact that it was his great grand daughter who carried the tune…

During our trip to Chicago, Daddy kept saying things like “bogus” and saying we were just like Bill and Ted. I had no idea what he was talking about – so just like any other 14 month old, I jumped on Google and quickly figured out he was referencing a movie from the late 80’s called “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure“…
I agree with my dad that the reference basically works, except that instead of going on an adventure to “olden times”, we were going to see some “old timers” – (don’t blame me for that one, Daddy made me put it in…). Although it was a quick trip, we saw Great Grandma Bea, Great Grandpa Irv, Aunt Julie, Cousin Donna, Uncle Jimmy AND Grandma Jill and Grandpa Mike even came in from Boston to meet us!
I had a lot of fun seeing everyone and showing them all my new tricks (mostly walking and standing up all by myself). They mostly just wanted to give me kisses – its a good thing I like kisses, because I got A LOT of them!
Here are some other shots we took along the way…
Can’t wait to see everyone again really soon!
