On Saturday, Maile put on her Duke Blue Devil gear and we got ready to watch the Duke/Georgetown game on TV. It was Maile’s first college basketball game and since both teams were ranked in the top ten, we thought it would be a good one. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils did not come to play and the Hoyas blew them out of the arena.
Poor Maile. I had prepped her by telling her how great Duke was and now she’s just really confused about what “good” basketball really is. She told me she’d give them another chance, but she’s just not sure she can throw her loyalties behind a team that put forth such a lackluster effort. I told her I completely understand and that we won’t make her wear her Duke gear for a little while. She said that probably made sense until Duke proves their worthy of her fanhood.
Mommy and Maile before the game - we're getting all pumped up!
Daddy and Maile - if it's not obvious, this was taken AFTER the game. Duke got blown out. So embarrassing. I tried to comfort daddy by being extremely cute. He said it helped.
We've started falling into a pretty rigid schedule - right after I eat dinner, it's bath time! I tell mommy we should try the other way around some time, but for some reason she doesn't think that will work...
Mommy says I look like daddy when I eat. I haven't really noticed butternut squash in his eyebrow, but maybe I'm missing something...
They say the first step to overcoming something is admitting it. A few weeks ago I was getting all fancy by holding my own bottle and eating solid foods – basically, telling my mommy that I was moving on. Well, I’m ready to say that I haven’t quite mastered this whole eating thing and I still need my mommy’s help. Luckily, she is more than happy to help me out … after she takes a quick video to make sure I don’t forget!
I came home from playing with Hannah and Megan today and there was a big surprise waiting for me – my daddy was back home! Yay!
I should probably back up a bit. Last week my daddy was not feeling well. He had a bad cold. Even though he needed to stay away from me, I still tried to make him feel better from afar. Unfortunately, on Thursday while I was over at Hannah’s, my daddy’s doctor called and told him he needed to go the hospital for some tests. Well, my daddy went and then they kept him (how rude, right?). I wasn’t allowed to visit because I’m too young. We video chatted on the computer a few times, but it just wasn’t the same. I really missed my daddy. He had to stay at the hospital the whole weekend and Monday too. They finally let him come home today.
He told me he is feeling much better. He said he still needs to be careful around me – no kisses for the time being (which totally stinks!) – but just having him in the same room is MUCH better. As soon as I saw him, I gave him one of my big ol’ smiles, just so he knew how much I missed him. He gave me a big hug and now we are back to being buddies again. So happy to have my daddy home!
(Dad note: Sorry this is the first many of you are hearing of this. Kind of took us by surprise and I didn’t want to post until we knew what was going on. Some tests my doctor gave me indicated my liver was acting abnormally and that’s what ended up sending me to the hospital. The liver levels were still high through the weekend and thus, I had to stay and let them monitor me. They still don’t know 100% what is wrong, but the leading guess is something called CMV. Apparently it is all over the place and most people are exposed by the time they are my age, but a small percentage are not and it can cause the symptoms I was having. I guess one way to think of it is its like a mono-type virus. I’ll need to take it easy for a little while and keep getting tests to make sure everything is recovering as it should – but it is really good to be home. I was away from Maile for 5.5 days – the longest I ever have been. I’m convinced she gained about 5 pounds and grew 5 inches while I was gone! I think just having her around will help me get better…)
Daddy, I'm going to take good care of you - no more disappearing to the hospital for you!
I missed you too, Maile girl, very, very good to be home!
I'm a lucky girl getting kisses from my mommy and daddy!
When we were on Hawaii for Christmas, we asked our wedding photographer, Derek Wong, to take some family pictures for us. Maile was probably a little young (5.5 months in these photos), but we still got some great shots. See below for the highlights…
Over the past week, mommy has introduced me to two new types of food – or as I like to think of them, colors to play with! Green peas and orange carrots. I think Peas are my favorite food so far – and despite the pictures below, I am starting to get more and more into my actual mouth!
Focused on crafting my latest carrot masterpiece...
Just you try to get those peas in my mouth - I challenge thee!
I'm thinking of starting a green goatee trend, thoughts?
This weekend we joined a bunch of our San Francisco friends up in Tahoe. Tahoe is about 3 hours (without traffic) northeast of San Francisco. One of our friends had a cabin where most of the crew stayed, but we rented a condo to give Maile a little more peace and quiet.
We actually had to cut our trip a little short – a big storm is headed towards Tahoe and we felt it best to leave while the going was good. And even though getting home turned into a bit of an ordeal, we had a great time. The highlight was definitely introducing Maile to snow for the first time (although Maile might beg to differ). I think its safe to say the “Hawaii” runs strong in Maile girl – for that matter, its starting to run pretty strong in daddy too – it was cold up there!
Maile was great the whole weekend, entertaining all of our friends and reserving her tears for when she was alone with mommy and daddy. Now that she is 6 months, Maile really is quite fun to be around and she absolutely loves being around other people – although if she gets too worked up during the day, she sometimes has trouble getting to sleep at night.
Here are some pictures from the weekend…
Mommy showed Maile where Tahoe City was on the map so she could get her bearings...
First things first, Maile laid claim to the big bed - conveniently themed to match her bear outfit...
In preparation for the cold weather, Maile tried on some new head gear...

Umm ... when do we go back to Hawaii?
Okay, fair enough, when we do it like this it is quite fun!
