As you know, I’m going to be a big sister. So I said to my mommy, it’s time we got down to business and start fleshing out some things that a big sister should know how to do. First up, I wanted to learn how to use that cool metal thing you put up against you eyes.
Like this? A little to the left.
Better? Better.
I’ve been waiting to write this post for a couple months. Back in early June we found out that Christine was pregnant(!), but we decided we wanted to tell Maile the news before we posted on the blog. We thought it would be easier to tell Maile about the new baby once Mommy was showing a bit and if we knew the baby’s sex (so we could tell her if she was going to have a baby sister or a baby brother). Yesterday, we had the ultrasound and learned that we were having … a baby girl!
Christine and I were absolutely thrilled to learn that we’re going to have two little girls that will grow up together. We couldn’t wait to tell Maile and boy, the experience didn’t disappoint. We printed out a couple pictures from the ultrasound and headed to school to pick Maile up. We decided to tell her while we were there, so we found a bench outside her classroom and told her that there was a baby in Mommy’s tummy and that it was going to be a little sister for Maile. I will never forget the look on Maile’s face – it was like we had given her the greatest gift ever – it took a moment for the news to register and then her eyes lit up and she got this “for me?” smile on her face.
Those who know Maile, know she’s not shy about displaying affection and she immediately started to hug Christine’s belly and kiss it. It was adorable. (And she hasn’t stopped since!) We then showed her the pictures and she proceeded to run around school waving the pictures and telling everyone she ran into that “my mommy has a baby in her tummy” – it was awesome!
I took a few pictures and some video after we shared the news …
The baby is in your tummy? Like right here?
Love, love baby sister!
And, of course, here are some pictures of Maile’s little sister – she’s a little shy right now, but she’ll warm up when she arrives on January 20th!
Peek-a-boo little baby girl!

Score one for Mommy. They were in Japantown yesterday and Maile took an interest in these colorful sponges they had. So Mommy bought some for Maile and showed her how to do the dishes when they got home. Now Maile LOVES doing the dishes! Half way through dinner she’s asking us if she is done, so she can wash the dishes. What are the chances this keeps up for the next 15 years?
See Daddy, this is how you wash the dishes. She run the water, put some soap on the sponge and then you make sure you scrub all the dirty food off of the dish!
Daddy, this one is done, are there any more?
Maile’s first day of school at Presidio Knolls is tomorrow. She had today off so she and Mommy had a “girls’ day” to celebrate the last day of summer. They hit the park in the morning and then went to Japantown for lunch and Mommy bought Maile a new notebook and pen. When Maile got home she set to work “studying”… these pictures gave me a glimpse of the future…
Maile Girl focused on her work...
Hmm... this is a tough one!
Thank you, Mommy, for my fun new notebook - I promise to study hard!
Shades? Check.
Popsicle? Check.
Good jams? Check.
Sophie? Check.
Maile Girl had everything she needed to rock out with her bad self at Off the Grid on Friday night!

Today Grandma Jill and Papa Mike took me to Muir Woods. I’m 3 now, so I’ve seen a few things, but never in my life have I seen trees so big! One of them I was even able to walk inside! (And I’m pretty tall now too.)
We hiked all over – it was a lot of fun. Afterwards, we went to Sausalito – I brought my camera and took lots of pictures of all the cool boats.
It was a really fun day – Grandma and Papa sure know how to have fun!
Wow.
These trees are crazy big!
I'm going to ask Mommy if we can grow one of these trees in the backyard!
Today Grandma and Papa Boston took Maile to the Creativity Museum. We went awhile back, but Maile wasn’t really old enough to enjoy everything. Apparently that all changed as they spent a good part of the day exploring all over and especially in the claymation room.
Learning the ropes from one of the museum staff.
Working hard on her project...
Maile's first figure - a penguin! (Dad note: Maile is in a 'I-really-would-prefer-if-you-didn't-take-my-picture' phase hence the lack of smiles!)
Maile's claymation shark - the museum also let's you do stop motion capture - Maile didn't do that this time, but maybe next time her shark will eat her penguin 🙂
Maile Girl went on her very first vacation without Mommy and Daddy this week. Grandma Jill and Papa Mike took Maile down to Monterey for the night. (She’s been away from us before, but we’ve always left her on her home turf, this is the first time she’s headed out without us.) By all accounts she did great and had a blast exploring the sites of Monterey. They hit the Dennis the Menace playground, checked out Carmel and visited the Monterey Aquarium. Maile knows a thing or two about aquariums and said this one was top notch.
Grandpa Mike went to the Dennis the Menace Playground when he was a little boy - this was a return trip, some 50 years later!
It was hard to tell who had more fun, Maile Girl or Papa Mike...
Dinner had an amazing view - right off the pier were a bunch of seals! Maile loved it.
Love this picture of Grandma Jill and Maile - both fascinated by the sites at the aquarium!
No trip would be complete without a souvenir. This is our new pink, purple, blue whale - Maile is currently snuggled up asleep with her.
Thank you Grandma Jill and Papa Mike for the first of many adventures!
On Sunday, Mommy and Grandma Jill took Maile to her first official ballet. We found a school called the Tutu School just down the street from us. Classes don’t start for a couple weeks, but this was a “test class” to see what Maile thought. I think it’s safe to say that we will be coming again…
This is going to come as a huge shock, but Mommy and Grandma Jill took a few videos during the class. Enjoy!
(* The asterisk in the title is because unofficially Maile’s first ballet class was last year with Auntie Elyssa 🙂

Maile Girl in her new ballerina tutu - she LOVES it!
Guess what? I’m starting ballet classes! How fun is that? I love dancing all around and while I think my moves are pretty great, Mommy and Daddy said that there are teachers that can help me learn even more. I like my teachers at school, so I figure a teacher who teaches dance must be pretty awesome as well!
I thought just taking ballet classes was going to be enough, but Mommy said that I get a special outfit to wear. And let me tell you – the outfit is soooo pretty! Since Grandma and Papa Boston were in town they took me to a special store to pick out my ballerina outfit. Grandma says she was in heaven. There was a lady at the store who helped us out – I got to pick out my very own tutu, some pink tights and special shoes. Mommy says I can only wear the shoes in our house when I practice or at my ballet lessons – I can’t wear them outside. BUT she did let me wear my tutu outside AND she even said I could sleep in it. I might never take it off.
Thank you Grandma Jill (and Papa Mike) for my very first ballerina tutu. It’s purple and pretty and perfect. I love it.
