First Family (Board) Game

by Papa K on January 10, 2012

Awhile back Grandma Jill and Papa Mike started sending Maile High Five magazine (it’s the younger version of Highlights magazine for those of you that remember that). A couple nights ago Maile discovered that the back of the magazine had a game you could cut out and play. She asked if we could play it. The game is made for 3 players – perfect!

The rules are simple. Each player has a suitcase with pictures of 6 items inside. One at a time you pick a card from the pile. If it matches something in your suitcase, you add it in and then go again. If it doesn’t match it goes to the bottom of the deck and it’s the next player’s turn. Once you fill your suitcase, you get to close it up!

Maile loves this game! And she follows the rules (mostly) and takes turns. We’ve played it every night at least twice for the past 3 nights!

Matching Jammies for the Family

by Papa K on January 8, 2012

Every year, I buy Maile and Mommy matching pajamas for Christmas. Maile LOVES them – I think she would wear them every night if she could.

This year Daddy got into the mix too - although we had to explain to Maile that Daddy's top looks different because boys don't like patterned pajamas.

Dad note: I realize this is one step away from matching family sweaters – we’re not going there though. Matching is for inside the house only. Really. No, really.

Christmas 2011

by Papa K on December 30, 2011

Christmas with Christine’s family is a multi-day affair (and this was even before my Hanukkah-influenced “8 Crazy Nights” came into the picture ;). Christmas Eve is spent at Aunty Cindy’s house where Santa comes to visit and Grandma Gail coordinates a bunch of family games. Christmas Day is a big luncheon with the families of Christine’s grandmother and her 9 siblings (that adds up to A LOT of cousins!) And then on the 26th we return to Kauai and open up all the presents under Grandma and Papa’s tree.

The girls are ready to rock Christmas...

Waiting for Santa - as we'll soon see, not sure Maile fully understood what they were looking for - she was just following her cousins...

This is the best smile you are going to get out of me. (Dad note: Maile did great this year - she was nervous, but no tears!)

For me?!? So I make nice with Santa, take a few pictures, and I get a present? Now, I understand!

On Christmas Day, with the girls all dressed up, we decided to take some pictures…

One of Maile’s favorite presents is the doctor’s kit that Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal got her. Mommy and I have had oh, about a dozen check ups each in the past couple of days. 2012 is going to be a super healthy year for us with Dr. Maile keeping tabs on us.

Getting My Shave Ice Fix

by Maile Girl on December 27, 2011

Last year, I had my first shave ice. I was a little tentative going in, but ultimately decided it was pretty tasty.

This year, I went in very excited. Ever since we landed on Honolulu, Mommy had been promising a return trip to get some shave ice. I had to be a good girl all morning (which I was … mostly) and as a treat Mommy and Daddy took me to Waiola’s – which Mommy says is THE SPOT for the real deal shave ice.

The older I get, the more I enjoy the shave ice!

In that regard I take after my Mommy!

(Dad note: Christmas pictures are coming! Promise. Lots to go through and we’ve been having fun in the sun 😉

‘Tis the Season…

by Papa K on December 4, 2011

On Friday night, we headed over to the Christmas Tree lot and picked up our tree. We’re not sure if Maile remembers the last time she decorated a tree, but she certainly had a blast doing it this year! Our tree definitely has a mass of ornaments from roughly 2.5 feet high and below – there’s no doubt that Maile Girl made her mark…

This is a pretty one - let's hang this one on the tree...

Mommy, will you help me? I want to put it right here...

Changing Traditions

by Papa K on December 1, 2011

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday – we go home to Boston every year and there are a number of traditions that I’ve been enjoying for many, many years. This year was the first year I really saw how much the traditions were changing with all the little ones getting to an age where they could actually start to partake in them with us…

Thanksgiving morning we went to the St. John's Prep football game - it was really cold! Mommy, Daddy hug me closer!

Daddy plays tackle (yes tackle!) football at his old elementary school the Friday after Thanksgiving - Maile didn't play this year, but hopefully she will be able to soon because its the only way Daddy can retire...

Friday night we hosted the St. John's guys and their families for dinner - Maile had a blast catching up with her east coast friends. Looks like we're going to find somewhere else for the picture soon though!

It was a great Thanksgiving – can’t wait until next year!

Whenever we go to the dentist (e.g. Papa) over Thanksgiving, I try to take good care of Mommy.

I'm right here for you Mommy, just squeeze my hand if it hurts...

This appears to be a bit more complicated than when we brush my teeth at home!

Mommy returned the favor by keeping me company when it was my turn - she helped me to be a very brave girl!

(Dad note: This year’s visit was definitely a break through for Maile Girl. She hasn’t been the best patient during past visits. This year started off with lots of tears, but Maile completely relaxed after seeing Mommy get her teeth done and then didn’t freak out at all when it was her turn. Hat tip to Lynn who really helped make Maile comfortable – the huge bag of prizes and stickers helped too!)

Happy 92nd to Great Grandpa Irv!

by Papa K on November 13, 2011

Maile’s Great Grandpa Irv turns 92 on Monday! We headed to Chicago this weekend to wish him a happy birthday in person. Papa Mike and Grandma Jill also came in from Boston to meet us. We had a wonderful weekend spending time with the family and especially spending time with “GG Irv” who has 90 years(!) on Maile Girl.

I think it’s safe to say that Great Grandpa Irv’s 92nd birthday is the first time he’s had “Happy Birthday” sung to him in Mandarin Chinese! And I’m sure he got a kick out of the fact that it was his great grand daughter who carried the tune…

Maile and the Pumpkin Patch

by Papa K on November 6, 2011

We’ve been having so much fun with Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal visiting that we are a week behind posting about some of our adventures. The Saturday before Halloween, we all piled into the car and headed out to Half Moon Bay to check out the pumpkin patches.

There was a petting zoo, but you'll notice no animals can be seen in this photo - that's because this was as close as Maile was willing to get...

While she wanted nothing to do with the real animals, Maile was a huge fan of these pink wooden ponies!
