My Mommy Can Fly!

Just going to toss this out there Mommy, this doesn't seem like such a great idea...

Maile Girl here. I learned something new about my mommy and daddy this weekend in Vermont – they can fly! Kind of like an airplane. Crazy, right? All I know is that my mommy put on a helmet, walked up a ladder and then away she went! See for yourself…

Dad note: I like the look on her face at the end – kind of says “wait, she’s coming back, right?”

Vermont: Highs and Lows

by Maile Girl on September 12, 2011

As Daddy mentioned yesterday, this weekend we went to Vermont (my 6th state!) for a wedding. Auntie Elyssa came too and I had so much fun playing with her. Vermont is really, really, really, really far away though. So far that my tummy didn’t like it. Overall, I’d say that Vermont was 5 stars (out of 5, since that’s pretty much how high I can consistently count), but the car ride there was a minus 1,000 stars (that’s as big as numbers get, right?)

Quality time with Mommy and Daddy was definitely a highlight of the trip...

... but I could have passed on the 4 hour car ride!

(Dad note: Poor Maile Girl got carsick both going and coming from Vermont. Both times right around the 3 hour mark of the drive. She was a trooper though and got back in the car both times after we cleaned everything off. That last hour though, I winced on every bump we went over…)

Bittersweet Labor Day

by Papa K on September 6, 2011

We had a mini Labor Day party at our place on Monday. It was a little bittersweet as it was Hannah’s last weekend living in San Francisco. The good news is that she isn’t moving too far away – just down the Peninsula a bit, but we’ll miss having her (and her parents) right up the street!

Nothing says Labor Day like a hot dog from the grill!

Maile’s “Not A Box” House

by Papa K on August 29, 2011

Sunday morning Maile and Mommy did a little construction project and built an addition to our apartment especially for Maile Girl. Her very own “not a box” house!

(Dad note: big props to Mommy on this one – Maile absolutely loves her house, she’s been playing in it non-stop since it was built!)

Memory

by Papa K on August 23, 2011

It’s been awhile since we checked in on Maile and her iPad “skills”. We’ve had this memory game for awhile now, but Maile was never able to figure it out. She’d just press the same squares over and over again getting a kick out of the animal noises. Something finally clicked with Mommy over the weekend and she realized that she could “match” the different animals. The video is a little long, but pretty cool (I definitely got a kick out of this one!)…

SoccerTots Update

by Papa K on August 11, 2011

With so much excitement due to the start of preschool, we didn’t have time to write about the last class of Maile’s first session of soccer. For the last couple of months, every Saturday, Maile and I have attended a SoccerTots soccer program. It was a lot of fun and Maile made a lot of progress since her first class back in June.

Let's do this!

Let's do this!

Every session starts out with a stretching session - Maile always goes and stands on the purple dot.

After stretching, we practice our soccer skills - Daddy helps with balance, but Maile is getting pretty good at standing with one foot on the ball...

Then we do some drills - here Maile is kicking over the cones with the ball...

Maile’s First Day of School

by Papa K on August 8, 2011

Maile Girl - all ready for her first day of school!

Maile Girl - all ready for her first day of school!

As we mentioned last week, today was Maile’s first day of preschool. We’ve been talking about it for weeks, so I think Maile was genuinely excited as we got all packed up this morning. (Perhaps too excited as she had one of her worst nights of sleep in months last night – hence all the tired looking faces in the family picture below!)

Family Picture - Maile's first day of school

We, honestly, had no idea what to expect when we got to school. On one hand, Maile is generally pretty sociable, but lately around strangers she was a bit clingy. (Dad note: We decided to leave the cameras at home for the first day – we didn’t want anything to get in the way of Maile getting settled in.)

I have a feeling we'll be chasing her from here on out...

Things went pretty smooth when we arrived at the school. We went a bit early and were the first ones there. Maile instantly started exploring the classroom and met a couple of her teachers (“lao shi”). Maile’s school does a Mandarin immersion program – so the teachers or lao shi speak a combination of english and mandarin. I have no doubt we’ll be exploring this fact more in the months ahead…

Funniest part of the drop off was when Maile found the bathroom. They have a bunch of toddler-sized toilets. Maile went right over and said she wanted to get on the “potty” and started taking off her pants. Sure enough, she jumped right onto the toilet and sat there for about 5 minutes. She didn’t actually go, but afterwards, she grabbed some toilet paper to wipe herself, flushed the toilet and washed her hands. The teachers were pretty impressed that she was potty trained. Of course, that’s the first time she’s ever done that!

There were definitely some tears and clinging as we left, but the school called about an hour later to say that Maile only cried for a few minutes and then settled in great to the class activities.

Chris went to pick her up for a half day at 12:45. Maile was all smiles and tonight at dinner said she was looking forward to going back tomorrow!

Maile's teachers sent home a fun personalized "report" of her first day - definitely a "nice touch"!

All in all, definitely a successful first day of school!

(Dad note: I haven’t fully decided how I’m going to handle blogging about Maile at school – which is why I didn’t link to the school directly. More than happy to talk about it though if you want to ping me directly – we’ve been very happy so far!)

Exploring the Exploratorium

by Papa K on August 2, 2011

On Sunday, we took Maile to the Exploratorium. It’s a fun museum to go to – something for everyone. Chris and I learn science-y type stuff and Maile gets to touch, prod, pull and twist everything in sight. Oh, and did I mention there are bubbles!

Mommy is getting REALLY good with the new camera lens!
