Since it was a holiday, I thought I'd get Allison and I something a little tastier to drink...
I snuck over to the cooler and tried to snag us a couple Coronas...
BUSTED!
I did manage to sneak away with a lime however ... kind of wish I hadn't to be honest...
To make matters worse, while I was trying to snag Allison and I some Coronas, Jake snuck in and tried to STEAL MY MOMMY! Can you believe that? Luckily I made it back in time and made it very clear I wasn't letting her go anywhere!
(Dad note: We hope everyone had a great 4th of July – as Maile’s (mis)adventures above show, we had a great time celebrating with a great BBQ with some of our SF friends…)
The Red Sox came to town this weekend during interleague play to play the San Francisco Giants. We decided it would be the perfect opportunity to take Maile to her first ballgame.
We took the bus to the game, which we actually realized was her first bus ride. She may have liked the bus ride better than the game. We counted and she made 14 new friends on the bus. Basically, whoever sat down next to us, she’d stare at them until they smiled and then she would just start chatting away telling them stories. As I said when I rode the New York subway with Maile, they should pay people to ride the subways with babies – it just makes everyone happier (assuming they aren’t screaming!)
Good times on the bus ride to the ball game...
... until I let Maile out of the baby bjorn...
Unfortunately, we didn’t get a ton of great pictures from the actual game, but we had a great time. Maile was fantastic. We did have to move around a bit. I think we spent 2.5 – 3 innings in our actual seats, but then we walked around and visited some friends that were also in attendance. AT&T Park is also great for kids – they have a play area in the outfield and also a Build A Bear Workshop – and yes, we were the sucker parents that bought Maile a baseball bear.
Look at these jokers - 30 minutes before game time and they're all smiling away. Game faces, people!
Just outside AT&T park with Mr. Mays...
The ladies taking in the game and routing for the Sawx!
Maile was very concerned by Clay Buchholz's injury - it didn't look good 🙁
Daddy and Maile out in the bleachers - Maile is starting to get a little sleepy...
All in all, a great first Red Sox adventure for Maile Girl – including a 4-2 victory for the good guys!
I mean check out this view - can you blame me for crashing?!
This time the weather was much nicer, so we got some quality time in at the pool.
Just cruising the kiddie pool, checking out the scene...
This is the life! So much fun!
I really was loving the water – I could have played it in all day (perhaps because it was about 90 degrees). I even showed mommy that I was indeed learning from swim class, by remembering how to do “Humpty Dumpty”…
For dinner we headed over to the Hanalei Dolphin – I had my normal food, but mommy and daddy said their fish was excellent. The best part of the restaurant was that I met a really cute waiter. Mommy said that not only was he the cutest waiter at the restaurant, but also the nicest – I’m still not sure that made daddy any happier with my flirting. (Dad note: probably hard to convey this story via the blog, but Maile had this waiter wrapped around her little finger. He smiled at her every time he passed our table and when he came over to say hi, she got all smiley and giggly. Yikes.)
Mommy, Daddy and Me after a great dinner at Hanalei Dolphin. Hey cute waiter, call me!
All in all it was another wonderful visit to the north side of Kauai and the St. Regis!
(Dad note: and very relaxing too, minus Maile’s 6 AM wake up call…)
Maile girl is about a month away from her first birthday. Since we won’t be able to celebrate with Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal on Maile’s actual birthday, they decided to throw Maile a mini-party here on Hawaii. Consider it a kick off to the festivities complete with presents and Maile’s first taste of ice cream!
All of these? For me?

Mommy teaching Maile that you always read the card first...
Thank you Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal for all my fun gifts!
After the presents it was time for the ice cream. Very early on (before Maile was even born I believe), Grandpa Cal requested that he be the one to first introduce Maile to ice cream. We thought that was a great idea and all agreed that her first birthday would be the right time to start developing her sweet tooth.
Here’s take #1 of Maile trying ice cream for the first time (yes, it took multiple takes…):
Clearly didn’t go as smooth as we were hoping – after a utensil correction, we nailed it on take #2:
Still not wildly in love with the ice cream – although I will say she warmed up to it a bit after we put the camera down. I guess for now we’ll leave it as a TBD whether she develops her Grandpa’s love of ice cream!

Don't worry, Maile and Daddy have plenty of sunscreen on!
You can’t have a trip to Hawaii without a little beach action, so on Saturday we headed over to Lydgate Beach Park. (Great spot on Kauai if you have kids btw. For one the ocean has built-in kiddie pools with rocks protecting from the surf and across the street is a great playground.)
We were looking forward to having Maile show off everything she’s learned in her swim classes for Grandma and Grandpa – and sure enough, she clinged to Mommy and Daddy like a pro 😉
Mommy, this pool is so much nicer then the one at the JCC, but if its alright with you, I'll stay close to you all the same...
Maile and Daddy hitting the waves...
Ahh, this is the life! (Dad note: Yes, that's Maile girl in the shade being hand fed grapes - quite a life our little girl leads...)
Last time, daddy got the parting artistic shot – this time, its mommy’s turn…
Thank you Mommy for a fun day at the beach. You're welcome, Maile Girl.
My first piano lesson with mommy - she said I did a wonderful job!
Do I have to practice?
During my explorations of Grandma and Grandpa’s house I noticed this big box sitting in the corner of the living room. I asked mommy what it was and she told me it was a “piano” and that she used to play it. I asked her to show me how it worked and she obliged.
She showed me how pressing the keys made noises and that if you pressed them in the right order the noises sounded like music. (She then had daddy press the keys and told me that sometimes noise was just noise.)
After a bit of practice this is what I came up with – what do you think?
A little while back we bought a children’s version of Bob Marley’s greatest hits – B is for Bob – to play for Maile. I think there is some subliminal messaging going on because Maile’s latest trick during meal time is to take her food and rub it all in her hair. Typically by after lunch she starts to develop some serious baby dreads…
As you know we found out on Thursday afternoon that Maile had the chicken pox. She woke up on Friday with a few more spots, but for the most part was still her normal self and didn’t seem too bothered by everything.
Things changed dramatically on Saturday.
The chicken pox take over (with calomine lotion)
This is NOT comfortable.
For the most part on Saturday day, Maile was pretty good. The chicken pox started appearing all over her body, but she still was playful. She had a lot of trouble napping and her appetite went way down. She wanted to nurse way more than normal. She also was running a temperature of 102 to 103 throughout the day. (Side note: I can’t tell you how many times we’ve taken Maile’s temperature over the past 10 months thinking she might have a fever and have it come back normal. Now that she really does have a fever, I can say that you know a fever when you feel it – she is really hot to the touch, like hot pavement in the sun.)
Saturday night things got much worse. We just couldn’t get her down in her crib by herself. Christine ended up going to sleep with her at 8 PM and she basically would sleep for 15-20 minutes and then wake up from the itching or some other discomfort. This continued until about midnight. Then I went to bed with them and she tossed and turned between us all night long. She finally started sleeping longer spurts around 2:30 AM and I think we all got a good solid few hours in the early morning.
Unfortunately, she work up with the highest temperature yet – 104.7(!) We called the nurse hotline and were able to get the temperature under control with some Tylenol and a lukewarm bath. For all of Sunday morning she was really lethargic and definitely not her normal self. She basically slept on either Christine or I all morning long and when she wasn’t sleeping she was nursing or crying.
Mommy taking good care of her girl - this is how Maile spent most of her Sunday morning (when she wasn't doing the same on Daddy)...
This afternoon she started to perk up a bit and we were able to get her to play with her toys a bit – even crack a few smiles. We really hope last night and this morning was the worst of it, but we’ll see how tonight goes. Poor girl – she looks so uncomfortable.
(Side note: I was curious how many kids still have to suffer through the chicken pox now that there is a vaccine. I didn’t spend a ton of time on it, but this site from the CDC seems to indicate a decline of 85% in test areas (where they checked before and after the introduction of the vaccine). Pretty sure if Maile could talk she wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone, so hopefully she’s the last of her friends to suffer through the Pox. Perhaps this is the first “unique fact about me” she can use for an icebreaker one day!?)
