School is on a two week break before the summer session kicks in, so Mommy and Maile skipped town last week for Hawaii (and I joined this past Saturday). Whether it’s in the pool in the backyard or at the beach, Maile has been maximizing her time in the water!

Ice Cream with Papa

by Maile Girl on March 25, 2012

When I woke up on Friday morning, guess who was there to see me? Grandma Gail and Papa Cal! And you know what happens when Papa Cal is around? Yep, that’s right – ice cream for Maile Girl!

Mommy and I took Papa Cal up to one of our favorite ice cream spots. I think he liked it because he finished his whole cup and his was way bigger than mine!

Christmas 2011

by Papa K on December 30, 2011

Christmas with Christine’s family is a multi-day affair (and this was even before my Hanukkah-influenced “8 Crazy Nights” came into the picture ;). Christmas Eve is spent at Aunty Cindy’s house where Santa comes to visit and Grandma Gail coordinates a bunch of family games. Christmas Day is a big luncheon with the families of Christine’s grandmother and her 9 siblings (that adds up to A LOT of cousins!) And then on the 26th we return to Kauai and open up all the presents under Grandma and Papa’s tree.

The girls are ready to rock Christmas...

Waiting for Santa - as we'll soon see, not sure Maile fully understood what they were looking for - she was just following her cousins...

This is the best smile you are going to get out of me. (Dad note: Maile did great this year - she was nervous, but no tears!)

For me?!? So I make nice with Santa, take a few pictures, and I get a present? Now, I understand!

On Christmas Day, with the girls all dressed up, we decided to take some pictures…

On the 26th, we headed home to Kauai to a mountain of presents waiting under the tree for all the girls. They had a blast opening everything!

SO AWESOME! I got a real doctor's kit!

One of Maile’s favorite presents is the doctor’s kit that Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal got her. Mommy and I have had oh, about a dozen check ups each in the past couple of days. 2012 is going to be a super healthy year for us with Dr. Maile keeping tabs on us.

One of the first things that Christine told me about her father was that he used to do her hair as a child. I’ve come to have an even deeper respect for that fact over the past few months as Maile’s hair has gotten long enough to put into pig tails.

Christine is in New York this week and Grandma Gail and Papa Cal have been helping out. I’ve been incredibly busy at work as well, so it has really been great having them spend time with Maile. And plus, Papa Cal is way better at doing Maile’s hair then I am!

Home Alone

by Maile Girl on May 22, 2011

Well, I wasn’t really “alone” since Gramma Gail and Papa Cal were taking care of me, but this weekend Mommy and Daddy went to Maui without me. It’s the first time ever that I was away from both of them at the same time. At first, I was a little nervous, but then I realized I got to spend extra time with Gramma Gail and Papa Cal! And they sure didn’t disappoint, we did all sorts of fun things…

The morning Mommy and Daddy left, we went over to the local mall and guess who I am looking at here???

We also practiced my chopstick skills with some noodles for lunch - I'm getting pretty good!

On Friday, we went to the park and had a play date with a little girl named Sam - she was cool in my book because a) she was a year older than me and b) her Gramma brought watermelon!

Back at home Papa Cal helped me setup a pink tent in the living room. Let me repeat that: I have a PINK TENT IN THE LIVING ROOM! So cool.

(Dad note: Clearly Maile had a blast and we couldn’t be more thankful to Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal. We had a wonderfully relaxing trip to Maui and after a couple failed attempts, it was great to finally get away just the two of us. We missed Maile terribly, but knew she was in great hands and having lots of fun!)

(PS – Hat tip to Grandpa Cal for all the great pics and videos…)

Golf & Biking in Hawaii

by Papa K on May 15, 2011

As of a couple months ago, this post was going to be our first from our Japanese adventure. We had been planning to go visit Katie and Emily in Japan as well as tour Osaka and Kyoto. Due to the earthquake and the tragic aftermath, we decided to postpone our trip. (We should report that Katie, Emily and the rest of the family are fine.)

Not bad to have Hawaii as the fall back plan though! We arrived this afternoon and immediately took to some fun outdoor action…

Should I use my purple club or my pink one for this hole?

After golf, we decided we wanted to ride the bike – unfortunately, Maile still hasn’t figured out the whole “move the pedals to make you go” aspect of bike riding… (although at least this time, she was interested in sitting on the bike!)

Maile & the Bubble Gun

by Papa K on March 6, 2011

Grandpa Cal shows Maile the bubble gun...

Grandpa Cal shows Maile the bubble gun...

Grandpa Cal was on a mission as soon as he touched down in SF to get Maile Girl a bubble gun. His first attempt didn’t go so well – he tried to get Maile to walk up to Walgreens with him (about 10 blocks away), but they only made it 2 blocks (Maile was much more interested in investigating every crack in the sidewalk and door on the way up the street).

Grandpa was finally successful and bubble wonderment commenced…

Papa, are you sure about this?

I'm going to try to touch them, okay?

To close out the recap of our Christmas trip to Hawaii, we thought we’d cover one of our favorite traditions – the making of Christmas cookies. This year it was all hands on deck, Grandma, Grandpa, Auntie Nao, Uncle Steve, Mommy, Daddy, Katie, Emily and Maile Girl all chipped in on the fun.

First, Mommy helped the girls pick out their cookie cutters...

Then came the best part – the decorating! Maile Girl was an ace with the sprinkles…
