Our Weekend with Glass

by Papa K on May 12, 2013

Maile meets Glass

Maile meets Glass

A couple weeks ago we got a pair of Google Glass (is that how you write that?) at the Pocket office. I took them home this weekend to try it out.

We gave them a good workout – Grandma and Papa Boston were in town and we were all over the city. We went down to the new Exploratorium, the Ferry Building, took a pedal cab, headed over to Presidio Picnic, went kite flying and did plenty of goofing around. In the video below almost every picture and video was taken with Google Glass (there are a couple I threw in that Papa Boston took of me wearing them).

My overall impression is that while it is a pretty cool experience to use, I don’t think they are something I’d wear on a regular basis and I see a lot of challenges to this particular form factor being adopted on a wide scale. Some more specific thoughts:

  • They were actual quite comfortable to wear – I was aware that I had them on, but didn’t find them uncomfortable and unless I specifically was trying to look at the screen, they didn’t get in the way of my normal interactions with people.
  • The screen worked pretty well – it’s pretty small, but for basic notifications (like the score of a ballgame) it works fine. The screen is pretty hard to see in sunlight though.
  • I don’t think this would replace me reaching in to my pocket and pulling out my phone for most things – you can get emails on it, but I don’t see that I would use it for that. The primary use cases for me were photos, videos, navigation and quick notifications (scores, weather, breaking news, etc.)
  • I did feel a bit ridiculous wearing them around the city – part of that is the novelty factor, lots of people come up to you and ask about them. Everyone was really excited about them though – still, just don’t see this going mainstream as it currently is designed.
  • You can judge for yourself in the video above, but I think the perspective is a lot of fun, especially with the girls. There were definitely moments I was able to capture that would have been ruined if I was trying to do it with my phone. I was able to be completely “in the moment” rough housing around with Maile or flying the kite – I liked that aspect a lot.

My friend, Jon, said it best, that there is a pretty good chance we look back at this post in the same way we laugh at the pictures of our parents from the 70’s, 80’s, etc. and laugh at what they were wearing. Google Glass may be my perm.

Lauren celebrated her 4 month birthday yesterday, so we decided to take a family picture. I also looked back at what I wrote when Maile turned 4 months old. I would say from a development perspective, Lauren seems pretty close to where Maile was. She is definitely a better sleeper overall, but like Maile, she has been having a night or two a week where she wakes up at 3 AM and just wants to hang out. She’s also VERY smiley, perhaps even more smiley than the original Smiley Maile – so we’ll see where that goes…

In terms of looks, Christine and I still think the girls look quite different. Definitely sisters, and definitely dominated by Mommy and hints of Daddy here and there – but different all the same. Part of it is that Lauren hasn’t lost her hair yet like Maile did around this time.

On Saturday, Maile and I rented a bike with a trailer and went on an adventure. We rode over the Golden Gate Bridge, stopped for lunch in Sausalito, had some ice cream (of course) and then headed home on the ferry. We had a blast! (Oh, and then Daddy took a two hour nap when he got home 😉

The ice cream was, of course, a highlight:

For me, the highlight was most certainly spending some quality time with Maile Girl!

For the past couple of weeks, Maile has been teaching Christine and I a Chinese word each night at dinner. She and one of her teachers decide on the word each day and then at dinner she teaches it to us. Maile LOVES teaching us and it’s a nice way to introduce some Mandarin on the homefront (and get her more comfortable speaking it in front of us).

Tonight Maile taught us her Chinese name. Christine actually worked with her teachers on Maile’s Chinese name last year – but up until tonight we didn’t realize that she knew it. As the video shows, I’m definitely the weak link on the Chinese speaking front…

After Dinner Soccer

by Papa K on April 11, 2013

The weather was amazing today, so after dinner, Maile and I headed outside to play some soccer in the courtyard. Mommy (as always) snapped some great photos…

Maile Girl here – I know Daddy has been telling you all about our trip to DC. It was awesome! On Sunday, Mommy, Daddy and Auntie Elyssa took Lauren and me to the airplane museum (Dad note: the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum). It was so cool – there were airplanes and even rocket ships every where! I learned all about how they fly – I think I could probably fly one myself now. Seriously.

Things started off a little slow. Daddy asked me how I thought plans worked and I said you just push. That was wrong.

Daddy took me to the Amelia Earhart exhibit (I knew about her from one of my Fancy Nancy books) and I learned a bit more about how airplanes really work...

I learned a lot, but the most fun was definitely pretending I was an airplane with Daddy and running all around - the real planes will come later I'm sure :)

On Thursday, we flew to Washington, DC to visit Auntie Elyssa and our good friends Ryan and Diana. We’re here for a week and have lots of fun planned – but first, we had some business to attend to. Unfortunately, due to the sequestration, White House tours have been canceled. Uncle Ryan works in the Eisenhower Old Executive Office Building and he decided he needed to have a “meeting” with Maile – perhaps due to her budding knowledge of China. We, of course, obliged … and once Maile took care of her business, decided to snap a few pictures as we went along…

On the way out, we stopped in front of the West Wing for a picture. I could lie and say that Maile was just intently focused behind us because Obama walked by - but really she was just tired of taking photos ;)

Last year, I taught Maile Roadhouse Blues in honor of a good friend of mine that passed away. Saturday was his birthday and as I do every year, I spent the day with Maile. (Next year we’ll get Lauren involved too.) We had a lot of fun and I decided to teach her another of his favorites, Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne…
