Happy Birthday To … Lauren?

by Papa K on February 8, 2015

Saturday was my birthday and I had a wonderful day celebrating with the girls. Mommy coordinated the whole thing from morning cards and signs to afternoon cake and then a fun evening out on the town. A perfect balance of fun with the little ladies and then a night out with Mommy and friends.

Here are some highlights…

The benefit of waking up at 5:30 AM is there is plenty of time to write the perfect card for Daddy (since Mommy let him sleep in)

But the best part was definitely the singing of Happy Birthday, where Lauren just assumed you always use her name 🙂

On Saturday, Lauren and I had the afternoon to ourselves while Mommy and Maile were off at a movie. We went for a long walk, took a long nap and then stumbled on this game that we ended up playing for about 30 minutes. It basically consisted of one of us hiding, counting to three, then jumping up, saying “Woo!” and running to the other person. Then it was the other persons turn.

Did I mentioned we did this for 30 minutes? It was actually a pretty good workout for Daddy 😉 And as the video shows, Lauren is a very demanding play date.

As you know, on Thursdays I like to click back through the archive and see what was happening on this day in history. Tonight my first stop was January 15, 2013 and I found a keeper right away – Grandma and Papa Boston meet Lauren for the very first time…

One year earlier – and we have this smile of Maile’s lighting up your day…

Just a Maile smile to start your week...

And the year before that? Some silliness with Maile and her dollie in the stroller…

And we end our trip with this one…

I love you, daddy. I love you too, Maile girl.

A good day indeed.

Does Maile Really Know Chinese?

by Papa K on January 14, 2015

Google came out with a new Translate app today that has a cool feature where two people can have a conversation in different languages and the app acts as the translator. So person #1 speaks in English and the app translates into, say, Chinese. Then person #2 speaks in Chinese and the app translates into English.

I thought we’d have some fun with Maile and try it out – she’d speak Chinese, I’d speak English.

As you can see, we had a little trouble from the start. Either Maile really doesn’t know Chinese and this whole thing is a farce – or perhaps Google’s technology just can’t understand her high-pitched voice. Or maybe she was just goofing too much. Any way you slice it, the app had some trouble with Maile Girl’s Chinese…

And the difficulty absolutely slayed Maile…

#TBT Learning to Howl

by Papa K on January 8, 2015

I stumbled on this video from January 9th, 2011 and it cracked me up…

My goal for this weekend is to find this book and teach Lauren the same. Stay tuned.

First Night of Hanukkah (2014)

by Papa K on December 16, 2014

We had a lot of fun tonight celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. Our celebration actually started a couple days ago when Mommy whipped up some delicious latkes. Tonight we lit the lights and had fun opening and playing with our presents from Grandma and Papa Boston, Aunt Suzy and, of course, Mommy and Daddy. (We’re packing the presents into a shorter number of days this year due to our impending trip to Hawaii.)

Happy Hanukkah!

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted a family picture. This one was from Boston over Thanksgiving – we headed into town and explored Faneuil Hall for the day.

Thanksgiving Fun 2014

by Maile Girl on November 30, 2014

Maile Girl here – it’s been awhile since I’ve written and thought I’d say hi and tell you a bit about our Thanksgiving so far in Boston.

It looks like Daddy already covered the snow … which was awesome! If you could take the temperature in Hawaii and add snow to the mix, I think that would basically be the best thing ever. We should talk to Olaf.

It’s definitely a full house here and Grandma and Papa’s and Lauren and I have been taking full advantage. Papa, Grandma, Auntie Elyssa and Uncle Stephen are all here and that doesn’t even count the other people that have stopped by to say hi and play with us.

On Wednesday and Thursday there was LOTS of cooking going on for our Thanksgiving feast. The whole house smelled so yummy. I even chipped in this year making mini Apple Pies that I learned to make at cooking camp a few weeks back.

It’s not all cooking and eating though – we’ve also been spending a lot of time outdoors (even with the cold weather). Daddy has taken Lauren, Mommy and I on some walks and showed us where he grew up.

On Friday, we went to Daddy’s school that he went to for Kindergarten and met up with his old friends – people that he’s known as long as I’ve known Tori and my other friends! We played in the snow and then Daddy played football with his friends. Well, at least that’s what he called it – it didn’t look like the football games he watches on TV. At all.

Volunteering at the Food Bank

by Papa K on November 18, 2014

On Sunday, Maile and I headed over to the SF Marin Food Bank to volunteer for the morning alongside some of Maile’s classmates. One of the parents at PKS has really setup a great service program at the school – we’re big fans and have been having a lot of fun participating in the various activities.

I have to say the Food Bank volunteering was really well organized. We were tasked with sorting about 25,000 pounds(!) of pears – they were in these huge baskets and we sorted the good ones into boxes for delivery to families and removed the rotten ones. You really got a great sense of accomplishment working from the top to the bottom of the baskets – and the work was perfect for the kids. All in all an A+ service event!
